The Cliff House BlogCheer on the Coffins and Dress in Costume for the Annual Coffin Race

01 Oct, 2018

On October 27, join in on the fun—in its 24th year—to cheer on the coffin racers, admire the costumes, and see who will be crowned 2018 Miss Emma. The festival was inspired by Emma Crawford, a young woman who came to Manitou Springs in the 1800s for a cure for her tuberculosis. When Emma passed in 1890, her fiancé buried her on top of Red Mountain. She was reburied in the 1900s and moved to the south slope until two boys found her coffin had slid down the mountain into the canyon. After that, the coffin race began as a way to honor her memory. This year’s race will be followed by a fun festival to welcome the spooky holiday just around the corner.
