Hike the Red Rock Canyon

02 Jun, 2017

Red Rock Canyon was, in centuries past, an industrialist’s playground: gravel pits, rock quarries, gold refining mill, even a 53-acre landfill. Today, Red Rock Canyon Open Space is the site not of industrial exploitation, but natural preservation. With a recreational area that spans nearly 1500 acres, there’s ample space for hiking, climbing, horseback riding, and mountain biking, to name just a few favorite pastimes. For the novice hiker, we recommend the Upper Dog Loop trail, which is about a mile long across fairly gentle terrain (the Lower Dog Loop is shorter, but too noisy for our taste). Check out the 2.85-mile Mesa/Greenlee trail for its sublime views of Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods. And Quarry trail is a must for history aficionados; it leads to a 19th-century rock quarry, with stunning rock formations. Hogback trail, the longest at 3.3 miles, offers a lovely birds-eye-view of the park. Up on the mesa, the wildflowers stay in bloom through the early summer.
